The department's major research areas include gastrointestinal motility, reflux disease, and sensation from the gastrointestinal tract. Having shown that defects in the control of the valve between oesophagus and stomach are responsible for gastro-oesophageal reflux disease, novel drug therapies for reflux disease are currently being developed which attack the problem at the level of sphincter control. How food is propelled from the stomach into the small intestine is also a major focus in terms of physiology and mechanics, in particular how this may be regulated by blood glucose homeostasis, which is defective in diabetes
